As part of Climate Week NYC, the amazon industry delegation attended a meeting on Thursday, the 25th, at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York, where they were received by Ambassador Aldanio Ganem. The meeting discussed the importance of COP30 for the Amazon and the region’s strategic role in the global context.
The gathering brought together representatives of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA) and Jornada COP+, leaders of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and the Amazônia+21 Institute, along with other authorities and business representatives. The meeting established dialogue on the challenges and opportunities for access to sustainable investments in the Amazon, and on the need to build a socially just, ecological economic development model for the region.
Alex Carvalho, president of FIEPA and Jornada COP+, highlighted the main challenges of integrating the Amazon into national development, stressing the urgency of mapping and diagnosing the region’s production chains, particularly bioeconomy. “The Amazon is being lost to illegal activities. We need to free the region from dependency and welfare practices that lead to stagnation and the spread of illegality. It is time to transform the bioeconomy into bioindustry,” said Carvalho.
For the president, climate change denial and the difficulty of granting credit and financing to the Amazon are major obstacles to sustainable development in the region. “The Amazon is seen as an untouchable territory. We are the world’s largest environmental reserve, and we do not want to lose this title, but we also want to make it possible to scale production chains, such as those of açaí and biomass,” he concluded.
Carvalho also emphasized the three programs developed by Jornada COP+, which represent a legacy from the productive sector to the region: socio-bioeconomy, circular economy, and the fight against deforestation and illegal fires, considered essential pillars for the sustainable development of the Amazon.
Also attending the meeting were Marcelo Thomé, president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Rondônia (FIERO) and the Amazônia+21 Institute; Davi Bomtempo, executive secretary of SB COP and superintendent of Environment and Sustainability at CNI; Marcella Novaes, vice president of FIEPA and Jornada COP+; as well as other industry leaders and organizations.
