Belém was the stage, this Wednesday (12), for one of the most important business meetings held during COP30. The SB COP Business Dialogue for a Low Carbon Economy was promoted by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), with the support of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA). The event, held at FIEPA headquarters, brought together businesspeople, authorities and national and international experts to discuss the industry's path towards energy transition and sustainability.
At the opening of the event, the president of FIEPA, Alex Carvalho, highlighted the symbolism of hosting the meeting in Belém, especially at this time parallel to the 30th UN Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30), in which adding value to Amazonian resources and synergy between productive sectors is urgent.
“Doing this is about internalizing wealth and knowledge. Having them here symbolizes the opening of new opportunities, so that national and international investments can come to our land, bringing the capacity to transform realities and overcome challenges that are still present, such as the fact that 45% of the population lives below the poverty line,” he added.
The president of the CNI (National Confederation of Industry), Ricardo Alban, emphasized that sustainability is no longer an option but an essential part of the business strategy and competitiveness of Brazilian companies.
“We need to make it clear, to ourselves and to the world, to what extent our industry is competitive and committed to the climate. There is no company without consumers, and today's consumers demand responsibility. It is possible to reconcile economic development, innovation and sustainability, taking advantage of the benefits that nature offers us in a balanced way. The Equatorial Margin, for example, represents a concrete opportunity for development in the Amazon, provided it is done responsibly and with environmental respect,” noted the president of the CNI.
The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, reinforced the strategic role of the Amazon in the global climate agenda and the importance of including the productive sector as a protagonist in this transformation.
“It was a collective effort, from the government and society, that gave us the certainty that we made the right decision in bringing the biggest climate change event on the planet to the Amazonian atmosphere. We are prepared and very proud to show that we are capable,” he declared.
Barbalho emphasized that sustainability should be understood as a cross-cutting agenda that connects the environment, the economy, innovation, and quality of life to overcome the stigma that development and preservation are on opposite sides.
“Today we understand that production and preservation are inseparable. Sustainable production practices must be part of the design of economic activities. This is a market requirement, but also a matter of awareness for both producers and consumers,” he stated.
The SB COP (Sustainable Business COP) is the global coalition launched by CNI to coordinate sustainability actions and support the United Nations climate negotiations.
