IBRAM event at FIEPA highlights mining and energy transition.

The future of mining and the future of mining were discussed at an event held by the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará, FIEPA, this Tuesday, the 11th. The event brought together leaders from the mineral sector, representatives of large companies operating in the Amazon, parliamentarians, representatives of the federal and state governments, among other authorities.

The program was marked by speeches and dialogues about the importance of mining for the country's economy and for the energy transition, one of the main topics on the climate agenda and in the discussions at COP30. The vice-president of Ibram, Fernando Azevedo, highlighted how mining is necessary for technological development, and that COP marks the launch of the sector's commitments to environmental and social goals. "We need people to understand the importance of mining. I dare say that we are beginning the 21st century in Brazil as the century of mining. Technology is advancing, and each time technology advances, we see more minerals present," he pointed out.

The president of FIEPA and the COP+ Conference, Alex Carvalho, emphasized the importance of the sector for the development and economy of the region. "We yearn to overcome the challenge of poverty, to achieve sustainable development; we are clearly defenders of legal mining activities. I say this in terms of dignifying and improving jobs, and also in the capacity for dialogue, making activities increasingly present, not only in production processes, but also in interaction with us, the citizens of the Amazon. We are facing the opportunity to transform the reality of our country, of our Amazon, and to show the world our comparative and competitive advantages," he stated.

Representing the companies, Anderson Baranov, CEO of Hydro, emphasized the importance of multi-sector dialogue in seeking solutions and how mining can drive this transformation. "Building is difficult, but when you're on a team that builds, the delivery is much more laborious and brings great personal satisfaction. So I always see this in mining, because it's at the forefront of discussions and is driving this unity."

The National Secretary of Geology, Mining and Mineral Transformation of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Ana Paula Bittencourt, highlighted how Brazil is already a leader in climate solutions and mining. "Brazil is being seen by everyone in the world because we have minerals that are indispensable to fulfilling global commitments to decarbonize the economy. They are here and we need to transform them in a responsible, safe, and legal way, into income and jobs, bringing back to Brazil the close relationship between mining and society," she stated.
