Digital tool allows measuring CO₂ emissions in healthcare services and guides more sustainable practices.

The Social Service of Industry (SESI) presented, this Thursday (14), at the FIEPA headquarters, in Belém, the Carbon Footprint Calculators, developed by the SESI departments of Minas Gerais and Ceará, with the support of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA) and Sanofi, institutional supporter of the project. The initiative integrates health, technology and sustainability, allowing companies, workers and the general public to assess the environmental impact of habits and health care.
The digital tool measures individual CO₂ emissions associated with consultations, exams, telemedicine, immunization, and monitoring of chronic diseases. During COP30, the public will be able to test the calculator on an interactive screen installed at FIEPA headquarters, visualizing in real time how many kilograms of CO₂ can be saved by opting for more sustainable practices, such as teleconsultations.
During the event, two panels were held to delve deeper into the topic. The first, "Phygital Care Pathway," addressed the use of telehealth and the integration of digital and in-person services to expand access and efficiency in healthcare. Following that, the "Healthcare Decarbonization Calculator" panel detailed the tool's operation and the environmental impacts of different care modalities, bringing together the key stakeholders responsible for the project.
For Cláudio Patrício, from SESI Ceará, responsible for developing the calculator at his unit, the tool plays a strategic role and allows for precise measurement of impacts. "The great importance of this calculator is that it allows us to start from a data-driven beginning in the health sector, with concrete data to build a decarbonization strategy and prove the impact of coordinated care – and the cost of not providing care."
For Jonas Balbinot, from SESI Mato Grosso, who is also responsible for creating the calculator at his unit, the innovation serves as an educational and awareness-raising tool. "The new calculators are fundamental not only for measuring, but for educating. By making them available to young people and teenagers, we disseminate sustainability concepts and encourage concrete actions to reduce emissions."
According to Guillaume Pierart of Sanofi, an institutional supporter of the project, the tool transforms data into practical sustainability strategies. "It allows mapping and comparing emissions between procedures, offers automated recommendations, and presents quantified scenarios—including the 'no treatment' scenario—proving that coordinated care is also an environmentally efficient strategy."
The meeting highlighted how health, innovation, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, offering tools that help companies, workers, and society adopt more conscious and sustainable practices.
