Industry discusses pathways to a new Amazonian economy in a panel at the Green Zone.

The COP+ Journey, a multi-sector movement led by the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA), was presented at the Pará Pavilion, the main representation space in the Green Zone of the Conference. On Wednesday, the 12th, the movement held the panel “COP+ Journey and Industry, towards a new economic, social and environmental agenda in the Brazilian Amazon”. The panel discussed the role of industry in the transition to a new Amazonian economy, based on innovation, socio-environmental responsibility and regional development.

Launched in May 2024, the COP+ Journey engages the productive sector, government, academia, and civil society in creating sustainable solutions for a just transition in the Brazilian Amazon. The panel presented the results and strategies of the movement, highlighting advances in energy transition, traceability of production chains, attraction of green investments, and valuing the protagonism of women and traditional peoples, reaffirming the industry's commitment to an Amazonian model of sustainable, competitive, and socially just development.

During the panel, Priscilla Vieira, director of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará and leader of the Circular Economy committee, highlighted the legacy that the COP+ Journey intends to leave after the Conference. “The COP+ Journey, as the name suggests, goes beyond the COP. The president of FIEPA, Alex Carvalho, was very wise when he gave it this title; it was because we saw many actions taking place, we see that the Amazon has many needs and that these could not simply end when the COP was over.”

The director also emphasized the importance of sustainability combined with job creation and education. "With this goal in mind, we have been carrying out several projects. We must be concerned with generating employment. There is no way to change without education and a strong economy," she points out.

Paula Marlieri, Director of External Relations at Norsk Hydro Brazil, emphasized the need for social inclusion in discussions about the energy transition. "There is no development, there is no alternative to a just energy transition, if society is not involved, if the local community is not involved, if it is not included in the discussion," she stressed.

Emerson Rocha, executive director of Simineral, mentioned the Santarém Charter, one of the projects that will be part of the Industry Showcase, to be launched during the event. “The Santarém Charter is a sectoral movement in partnership with Semas, where we are building, for the first time in history, a snapshot of mining in Pará and understanding five thematic axes at this moment.”

The panel was moderated by journalist Mayra Leal, who highlighted the projects that will remain as a legacy after COP30, reinforcing the importance of lasting initiatives that consolidate the Amazon's leading role in sustainable development.

COP+ Journey - The movement is structured around ten committees: Low Carbon Economy, Energy Transition, Circular Economy, Digital Transformation and Innovation, Value Chain Traceability, Socio-bioeconomy, Infrastructure and Logistics, Communication and Advocacy, Investment Attraction, and Women and Traditional Peoples, which work in an integrated way to build concrete and lasting solutions. The 'plus' in its name reflects the commitment to go beyond COP30, leaving permanent legacies for the region.

Among the results, the document “Guidelines for a Low-Carbon Industry,” prepared by 180 professionals, stands out. It presents recommendations and pathways to boost industrial decarbonization through the use of biomass, circular economy, digital innovation, and traceability of production chains. The Journey also gave rise to three structuring programs: Support in Combating Deforestation and Illegal Burning, Sociobioeconomy, and Circular Economy, aimed at creating replicable solutions for regional sustainability.
