Innovative initiatives that generate a positive impact on the Amazonian economy were recognized at the Sustainable Industrial Excellence Forum, held this Thursday, November 13th, at the Albano Franco Auditorium, at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA). Promoted by the COP+ Journey, a multi-sectoral movement led by the Federation, the forum presented nine projects from Amazonian industries that are contributing to the decarbonization of the region.

The initiatives presented were selected through the COP+ Journey Case Study Call for Proposals. In total, 76 solutions were submitted to the call for proposals, and after analysis by a committee formed by experts from the COP+ Journey Curatorial Council and members of the FIEPA System, the projects with the greatest capacity to innovate, generate real impacts in the region, and inspire other companies were selected.

The solutions presented were those that won first place in each category. They are: “Water for All: water security and climate resilience on Combu Island” from the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability; “Boiteca: Livestock-Forest Integration and Sustainable Industrialization of Teak in the Amazon” from TRC Agroflorestal LTDA; the “Mega Hubs” and “Meta Florestal 2030” projects from Vale; “PRO Carbono” from Bayer; “Transforming waste into forests” from Mineração Paragominas SA; “Biogas and Energy Transition in the Amazon” from Guamá Tratamento de Resíduo; “Bioeconomy: agriculture, innovation and sustainability in the palm oil production chain” from the Brazilian Association of Palm Oil Producers; and the “Green Technology for Decarbonization of Motor Vehicles” project from Amazon Rhiira.

The Deputy Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of Pará, Rodolpho Zahluth, responsible for the "Water for All" project, explained the origin of the initiative developed on Combu Island and the positive impact it has generated in the community. "We saw a paradox in the islands of Belém, which are surrounded by water, but people don't have access to potable water. We managed to bring this model of rainwater harvesting, water treatment, and monitoring, which we now make available in schools on Combu Island, including to vendors of chilled water. So, by enabling this through the children, we can impact the entire universe of communities on the island," explained the secretary.

Tatiana da Costa Barbosa Iamamoto, head of the Amazon Rhiira project, highlighted the initiative's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the transportation sector. "I want to tell you that we (you, companies, government, individuals) are ready to decarbonize your entire vehicle fleet and help you meet ESG goals with an environmentally friendly and cost-effective device," she stated.

The other winners received a certificate of excellence awarded by the COP+ Journey. The event also marked the launch of the Sustainable Industry Case Showcase, a digital publication summarizing all entries. The goal is to give visibility to good practices and projects that have been successful in the Amazon, as well as to inspire other industries to replicate these solutions.

During the Forum of Excellence, the “Guidelines for a Low-Carbon Industry” were also presented, consisting of ten recommendations for a new environmental, social, and economic agenda in the Brazilian Amazon, formulated by the COP+ Journey committees: communication and advocacy, infrastructure and logistics, investment attraction, low-carbon economy, women and traditional peoples, socio-bioeconomy, circular economy, digital transformation and innovation, energy transition, and traceability of value chains.

The Forum also presented the next steps of the COP+ Journey until 2030. "We recognize the importance of this moment of COP30, of the environmental sustainability agenda, and we brought, in a very pragmatic and strategic way, a message of convergence. Today we are delivering to society, to the world, the answer that it is very possible to value economic activity combined with environmental conservation," stated the president of FIEPA and of the COP+ Journey, Alex Carvalho.

The president also emphasized that the transition to a low-carbon economy cannot happen in isolation. "In an unprecedented way, we had several in-depth dialogues with the third sector, with academia, with businesspeople who are here, with institutions that represent specific sectors, and with the public sector," he stated.
